The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) is working to build an education system that:
- Supports the achievement and wellbeing of all students
- Welcomes and includes all families
- Fosters the growth of all who work within it
- Is working to dream about and transform the trajectory of Public Education
This work was recognized at the Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) Innovation Awards in third place, which placed the work of WRDSB within the top three in the world in the Best Innovator - Public Sector category.
Director of Education jeewan chanicka attended the awards ceremony in Barcelona, Spain. He accepted the award on behalf of all our students, families, community partners and staff who are involved in helping to create a WRDSB where every student can achieve their full potential.
"While I'm receiving this award, this reflects a clear commitment to changing the trajectory of public education. I receive this honouring our ancestors and the many shoulders I stand on; a leadership council and senior team that has worked tirelessly to create systemic change; all our staff, families, community members, trustees and most importantly our students who believe we can do better," said Director chanicka. "To be in the top three in the world and the only K-12 system recognized in this way is an honour and strengthens our commitment to continue to dream and transform education on behalf of all those we serve!"

About the Global Management Institute (GIMI) Innovation Awards
The Innovation Awards aim to recognize and celebrate organizations and individuals' innovations initiatives in the public, private, and social sectors. Founded in 2009, the Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) is the first global standard certification board for innovation management.
The awards included finalists from around the world, including Austria, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, France, Indonesia, Italy, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, the United Arab Emirates and the United States of America. The WRDSB is proud to be the only K-12 system recognized by GIMI.
Director chanicka paid his own travel expenses and GIMI covered his ticket to the conference.
