OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
Celebrating International Education Week: November 18 – 22, 2024

November 20, 2024

Imagine stepping into a brand-new country full of unfamiliar faces, customs, and traditions how do you find your place? At the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB), we believe every international student deserves a warm welcome and the chance to thrive. International Education Week (November 18-22, 2024) isn't just about recognizing education world-wide it's about celebrating the global community that makes our schools so vibrant. From welcoming new students with open arms to creating lasting friendships that span continents, we're committed to turning every international student's journey into an unforgettable experience.

Welcoming New Faces, Building New Futures

At the OCSB, every international student is greeted with a special orientation day to help them get to know their new school, city, and culture. Whether they arrive in September or February, these students don't just learn about Canada they experience it firsthand, from visiting Parliament Hill to diving into Canadian traditions and bonding with peers through team-building activities. It's more than just a welcome it's the first step in a life-changing journey.

Fostering Global Friendships and Cross-Cultural Learning

What happens when international students and domestic students come together? Wonderful things! Our monthly activity days provide opportunities for students to explore new hobbies, share stories, and build connections across cultures. From cooking classes to sports days, there is something for everyone. The best part? International students are encouraged to bring a domestic student along, fostering friendships that can last long after graduation. Enrique, an international student from Mexico, captures this sentiment perfectly: "Be confident in sharing your culture and meeting other students because you can make excellent friends here."

Supporting the Well-being of our International students

The OCSB International Student Program is committed to promoting the well-being of students, helping them flourish and feel a strong sense of community. One of the ways we do this is through a monthly student newsletter and social media engagement with students. Topics include:

  • Wellness tips
  • Events and activities happening in Ottawa
  • Upcoming international student events
  • Explanations of Canadian holidays and dates of significance
  • Fun contests to participate in
  • Ways to connect with our team and more!

These efforts are in place to support our international students and ensure they have the best possible experience while with us. Stay connected with our International Student Program s social media channels, where we share many exciting events, tips and student perspectives!
