GRANDE PRAIRIE PUBLIC SCHOOL DIVISION
GPPSD's Krista Umble Honoured Nationally for Contributions to Indigenous Education

November 27, 2024

Grande Prairie Public School Division (GPPSD) is thrilled to celebrate Krista Umble, Division Coordinator of Indigenous Programming, as one of only five recipients of Indspire's prestigious Guiding the Journey: Indigenous Educator Awards. Krista was recognized for her exceptional contributions to Indigenous education at the 2024 National Gathering in Winnipeg, Manitoba, held from November 20-24.

Indspire, a national charity dedicated to advancing the education of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, honours educators who champion community-based education and uphold the principles of Indigenous knowledge. Krista's innovative and compassionate approach to her work exemplifies these values, making a lasting impact on GPPSD students, families, and staff.

"Krista is an extraordinary leader who has brought a vision of connection, support, and empowerment to life within our division," said GPPSD Superintendent Sandy McDonald. "Her work not only enriches the educational experience of our Indigenous students but also strengthens the entire school community by fostering understanding, pride, and respect."

Board Chair Joan Nellis also praised Krista's achievements: "Krista's dedication to Indigenous education embodies the spirit of reconciliation and community-building. This national recognition reflects the passion and care she shares with our division every day. Her leadership is paving the way for meaningful change and inspiration in our division and beyond."

"It's an honour to be recognized for the Guiding the Journey award from Indspire," Krista said. "My role in the Grande Prairie Public School Division is to be a relationship builder and to connect authentically with students, families, educators, and community."  She explained her favourite part of her role is being a positive influence in kids' lives. "I am honoured to walk beside them as they grow, learn, and achieve in their own educational journey."

According to GPPSD, Krista's work is guided by three key pillars: Connect, which creates opportunities for schools to engage with Elders and Knowledge Keepers; Support, which provides resources and encouragement to students and staff as they learn and grow; and Empower, which is key for Indigenous students and their families to have a voice and a place within their school communities.
