"Every school across B.C. is a community of unique individuals, each bringing their own background, experiences and perspectives," says the video's narrator. "Together, we create a place where everybody's appreciated, regardless of differences, because everyone belongs.
"Every student, staff and community member - regardless of race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or ability - is welcome and should feel comfortable and cared for at school."
The video is available in multiple languages, including:
The video notes the right to be treated equally and equitably is protected provincially and nationally by the B.C. Human Rights Code, the B.C. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is also supported by the district's Vision Statement & Guiding Principles and Surrey Schools policies on Anti-Discrimination & Human Rights and Racial Equity.
Additionally, staff training and community partnerships are also in place to keep students safe, protected and supported. Students can turn to their principal, teachers, counsellors or other staff members for guidance and encouragement, and staff work together to make sure students feel respected and heard.
"Creating a sense of belonging is a shared responsibility that takes understanding and effort, but it's worth it," says the video's narrator. "Because when students feel supported and respected, they're more likely to do well academically, socially and emotionally."
The video shows how schools support students and adults by offering inclusive groups and clubs, holding cultural celebrations, using respectful language, ensuring buildings are accessible and having library books and classroom resources that represent everyone. Inclusive school environments encourage conversations about current and historical challenges with discrimination and provide opportunities to celebrate differences and show support.
