RED DEER PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Red Deer Public staff develop leadership skills with tiny habits

February 24, 2025

Leadership starts with small, intentional actions. This was a key takeaway for attendees of Red Deer Public Schools' recent Aspiring Leaders session, where staff explored how simple, yet impactful habits can shape effective leadership. Inspired by the book Tiny Habits, authored by BJ Fogg, participants learned how to integrate new habits into their routines, and celebrate progress along the way.

As part of the session, a panel of Red Deer Public School leaders including Principals Chris Good, Jason Moline, Ryan Kure and Associate Superintendents Ron Eberts and Nicola Golby spoke about small habits that have strengthened both their professional and personal lives. Examples included building connections with staff, supporting colleagues and practicing gratitude.

After gaining an understanding and learning of some examples, attendees had a chance to reflect about their own aspirations, and identify behaviours that would help them achieve their goals. Table groups then collaborated to share ideas and insights, fostering a supportive environment to growth and leadership development.

"Leadership is about inspiring and empowering those around you to reach their full potential," said Corrine Thorsteinson, Associate Superintendent of People Services. "Leadership is about influence, action and making a difference every day. By starting with tiny habits we can create a strong foundation for personal and professional growth, allowing leadership to grow naturally over time."

There are two more Aspiring Leaders sessions scheduled to take place this school year. These include:

  • Leadership Spotlight on April 3
  • Leadership Symposium on May 29

"These sessions are a perfect opportunity for any Red Deer Public employee who wants to explore whether a formal leadership position is right for them; wants to build or enhance their leadership toolkit; wants to lead where they are at; or wants an opportunity to learn from and engage with other colleagues interested in leadership," said Corrine.
