MANITOBA
New Holocaust Curriculum Now Available to Grades 6, 9 and 11 Students

November 12, 2025

The Manitoba government is introducing a mandatory Holocaust curriculum for students to ensure it remains a vital part of historical education, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt announced on November 10.

"We are united as Manitobans and we must stand against hate," said Schmidt. "It's more important than ever to embrace the values of inclusion and diversity, and to learn from the past so it doesn't repeat. Teaching these lessons helps preserve the core principles of our province - respect for human rights, acceptance and unity. The most effective way to instill these values is by educating our youth."

A new curriculum for grades 6, 9 and 11 social studies students will create mandatory Holocaust education in all Manitoba schools, Schmidt said, adding the new resources offer educators a comprehensive overview of key topics related to Holocaust education, curriculum links and access to additional external resources to ensure effective instruction.

"The Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada is proud to have partnered with the Manitoba government on the development of this robust and enhanced curriculum. We have employed the highest standards of international best practices and are proud to have included Canadian resources including Manitoba authors," said Belle Jarniewski, executive director, Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada. "We believe this curriculum will provide students with a deeper understanding of one of history's darkest chapters, and will equip them to recognize and respond to hatred, discrimination and threats to democracy today."
