OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
Hands-On Inspiration: St. Matthew Students Explore Trades and Technology with Skills Ontario

November 17, 2025

Grade 8 students at St. Matthew High School recently traded their desks for drills, frosting bags, and welding simulators when the Skills Ontario Trades & Technology Truck pulled up to their school.

The mobile classroom gave students a chance to learn by doing, to try something new, and to see how their creativity and problem-solving skills can shape the world around them. Inside the truck, learning came alive. Students were laughing, creating, and working together to solve challenges. They were not just exploring trades and technology. They were discovering new strengths, new interests, and new confidence in what they can achieve.

A Classroom That Builds Bridges

Each session offered a new challenge and a new opportunity to connect learning to real life. Students took turns exploring:

  • Forklift operation
  • Welding
  • Cake decorating
  • Painting
  • Hair styling
  • Tool exploration
  • Electricity wall challenges

Every activity sparked a sense of discovery. Students were engaged, collaborating, problem-solving, and communicating as they explored each station. Whether mastering a virtual welding line or carefully piping frosting onto a cake, they were encouraged to try, test, and create while connecting what they had learned in class to the world around them. Each small success reminded them that learning grows stronger when it's shared, and that their skills and creativity can help build something meaningful for others.

Learning That Connects Heart and Mind

The visit from Skills Ontario reflected the kind of Deep Learning that happens when students are encouraged to think critically, create fearlessly, and learn from one another. They were connecting knowledge and skills with purpose and joy. Learning felt relevant and real because it came from experience, not just instruction.

Moments like these remind us that education is more than lessons and tests. It is about helping students see their own potential, recognize their strengths, and understand how their learning can make a difference in the world around them.

Nourishing New Beginnings

This experience at St. Matthew High School reflects how we build bridges through education. By opening doors to new possibilities, students discover that learning is not confined to the classroom. It lives in their curiosity, their creativity, and their willingness to try something new.
