Twelve Glashan Students Participate In International Learning Opportunity In Sweden

May 19, 2017

Twelve, Glashan grade eight students will be taking on the role of a lifetime when they become researchers and try to determine why Sweden is the world's leader in sustainable urban development.  They will not be doing this from the comfort of their downtown classroom but rather in Sweden.  The students are preparing to depart for Stockholm, Sweden next week as part of the OCDSB's commitment to international travel experiences at the elementary school level. The twelve students were selected from forty who applied to be part of this extraordinary trip.

With homestays arranged in both Stockholm and Uppsala, the Glashan students will live with students from two host schools and take part in cultural and educational activities with their homestay families. The itinerary includes visits to the Stockholm City Hall and the Canadian Embassy as well as other cultural destinations in Gamla Stan which is one of the largest and best preserved medieval cities in Europe.

The student's research project will includes a site visit and presentation by staff at the Stockholm Royal Seaport project.  This massive initiative is transforming a former industrial area into a world class urban development.

Glashan Principal, Jim Tayler who will be leading the trip says, "This international trip will offer these twelve students the opportunity showcase their capabilities in an international setting."

The trip to Sweden follows last year's groundbreaking trip to China as Glashan piloted the first international experience for elementary students.
