YORK REGION DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Markville Secondary School Places Second in Provincial Envirothon

July 3, 2018

A team of students from Markville S.S. placed second in a province-wide Envirothon hosted by Forests Ontario.

Students applied and expanded their knowledge of the environment in a variety of team-based tasks and workshops, designed to prepare students for future green careers.

The competition had a total of nearly 200 participating schools, with only 21 moving on to the provincial competition at the University of Waterloo. The Markville S.S. team, named Plant Daddys, took first place in the regional competition on April 19 and 26, 2018, advancing them to the provincial competition on May 27 and 30, 2018.

The team of students consisted of:

  • Winnie Lin
  • Alena Parkinson
  • Rachel Ruffo
  • Florence Sy
  • James Yuan

"We are incredibly proud of our student's performance at this year's Envirothon. This was a hard earned accomplishment and is a testament to the environmental learning that has been taking place at our school and across the Board," said Patricia Obadia, Principal of Markville S.S.

"Seeing our students engaged in this type of interactive learning was amazing," said Sabrina Liu, Teacher at Markville S.S. "The opportunity to work with professionals in the industry and present solutions to industry experts empowers our students so that they are excited about what they can accomplish."
