Westwood Places Second in Canada's Greenest School Competition

Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) congratulates Westwood Community High School on being the second place winner in Canada's Greenest School 2018 competition hosted by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). The recent announcement came when the school was chosen due to the "innovative and extremely impressive way (it) approach(es) sustainability and engage(s) students and local community."

CaGBC leads and accelerates the "transformation to high-performing, healthy green buildings, homes and communities throughout Canada," according to the official website.

Johnny Dulku, science teacher at the school entered the competition on behalf of his Green Initiative student environmental group. Founded in 2012, the after-school club, which has over 60 members has raised more than $90,000 through grants and contests to fund a variety of projects ranging from farm to table initiatives to climate leadership, just to name a few.

"Our club originally entered the competition two years ago. When we didn't place that year, we knew we needed to do more before trying again," recalls Dulku.

"We felt ready this spring and highlighted our sustainability efforts. Our kids have worked with students from other schools like Lacombe, so it was nice to see their friends get first place. We will definitely apply again."

Cynthia Shelley, Principal, Westwood, congratulated the group.

"Westwood is extremely proud of our students and staff for all of their contributions in making Westwood and our region greener, and we couldn't be more thrilled to receive this honour."

"Through the passion and guidance of Mr. Dulku, students have been able to bring awareness and become active members for environmental advocacy. This year, we have reconfigured to include junior high students, and the interest from the student body has dramatically increased. Students are excited to learn more about how they are able to contribute to building a sustainable future; it is clear to see that the passion is spreading," Shelley said.

Superintendent Doug Nicholls congratulated Green Initiative on another award.

"This June, Green Initiative won Samsung Canada's Solve for Tomorrow Challenge for the Western Region highlighting an opportunity to increase community awareness around energy technology. Their recent honour speaks to the calibre of the club. Johnny Dulku, Cynthia Shelley, and the students are to be commended for fostering environmental sustainability across the region, and highlighting their passion. Westwood is truly a national leader when it comes to supporting environmental stewardship."
