Today (9/25), the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released achievement results and the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is proud that results remain strong.
When compared to the province, 2018-19 EQAO results for TDSB students in Grades 3 and 6 show that a higher proportion are performing at or above the provincial standard in five of the six assessments in reading, writing and mathematics. This has been a consistent trend over the past five years, with a higher proportion of TDSB students continually performing at the highest level of EQAO.
When it comes to Mathematics achievement across the province, EQAO results confirm that many students are not meeting the provincial standard in Grade 9 Math and that action must be taken to support students. TDSB Grade 9 Mathematics results for 2018-19 show a decrease in the number of students meeting the provincial standard in both Applied and Academic.
Improvement in mathematics is a priority for the Toronto District School Board and across the province. Alongside the TDSB's Mathematics Action Plan, funding from the province's newly-announced four-year $200-million Math Strategy will help with this important work moving forward.
As part of the TDSB's Multi-Year Strategic Plan, we are committed to continuing work to support the majority of Grade 9 and 10 students to study at the academic level. Our research tells us that students in academic courses generally experience higher achievement in courses beyond Grade 10, greater success in post-secondary programs and maintain increased options beyond high school (e.g. college, university, apprenticeship, and workplace). Between 2014-15 and 2018-19, we have made significant progress in increasing the percentage of TDSB students taking Academic Mathematics from 74% to 81%. This is six percentage points higher than the provincial proportion of students currently taking Academic Mathematics at 75%.
TDSB results for the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) continue to increase year over year and remain higher than provincial results.
