We are proud to announce that Southgate Middle School and district Indigenous language and culture teacher Danita Lewis has once again been selected as one of 25 finalists for the 2019 Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching.

This is the second time that Danita has been honoured as a finalist for her First Nations Studies program which engages both Indigenous and non-Indigenous grade 6 and 7 Southgate Middle School students in learning about Indigenous people in Canada. Through experiential and exploratory learning, the program creates an awareness and respect for Indigenous history, culture, and tradition; and serves to build bridges between indigenous and non-Indigenous learners.
The Governor General's Award recognizes teachers from across the country for their exceptional work in teaching Canadian history. From the 25 finalists, six teachers will be honoured with a cash prize of $2,500, an additional $1,000 for their school, and an all-expense paid trip for two to Ottawa to receive their award.
