Surrey students win big at jazz festival

Earl Marriott Secondary's senior jazz band (above) was among the many secondary school bands that performed at the Surrey Schools Jazz Festival, as was North Surrey Secondary's Grade 8 jazz band (below).

The Bell Performing Arts Centre is still echoing with jazz after music students from Surrey and other school districts presented two days of outstanding performances at the Surrey Schools Jazz Festival.

The 38th-annual edition of the festival, held Feb. 21-22, saw adjudicated performances from secondary students across Surrey, showcasing their musical abilities and recognizing their talent with numerous awards.

Earl Marriott Secondary won Best Surrey Junior Jazz Band and Best Junior Jazz Band while Semiahmoo Secondary won Best Surrey Junior Jazz Rhythm Section and Best Surrey Senior Jazz Band.

Fleetwood Park Secondary won Best Surrey Junior/Senior Jazz Rhythm Section and shared Best Surrey Senior Jazz Rhythm Section with Guildford Park Secondary for a collaboration between the two schools.

École Salish Secondary won Best Surrey Junior/Senior Jazz Band and North Surrey Secondary won Best Junior/Senior Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

Individual students from Earl Marriott, Elgin Park, Fleetwood Park, North Surrey, Panorama Ridge, École Salish, Semiahmoo and Tamanawis took home awards in a variety of categories, including saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, drums, bass, guitar and auxiliary percussion.

Leading with the most individual awards and certificates was Semiahmoo with nine, followed by ties between Earl Marriott and École Salish (five), Fleetwood Park and Panorama Ridge (three), North Surrey and Tamanawis (two), and Elgin Park at one.
