VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD
Board elects new chair and vice-chair for the 2020-2021 term

December 3, 2020

At the November Board meeting of each calendar year, the Vancouver Board of Education's nine elected trustees select a chair and vice-chair to serve a one-year term.

Trustee Cho was chosen by trustees as chair at tonight's Board on the third ballot and Trustee Gonzalez was elected as vice-chair by acclamation.

As chair of the Board, Cho's primary responsibility is to safeguard the integrity of the Board's processes and represent the Board to the broader community. As vice-chair, Gonzalez acts on behalf of the chair, in her absence and assumes the duties and responsibilities of the chair.

Outgoing chair, Janet Fraser, was first elected in 2014. She was re-elected in the 2017 by-election as well as in October 2018. She served as chair of the Board for three years. During her terms, she led the Board through its governance update as well as its work to further address racism, continued the Board's Reconciliation journey, and, in the Board's support of students and families through the COVID-19 pandemic. Trustee Cho served as vice-chair since December 2019. She was first elected to the Vancouver School Board in October 2018.
