With $11.4 million from the B.C. government, the addition will provide 250 new seats to the school and replace the onsite portables, with a targeted opening of fall 2022. Crews are starting to put up tree protection barriers, with construction to start this summer when school is out.
"We are very excited to start construction on this 10-classroom addition to Sunnyside Elementary," said Laurie Larsen, chair, Surrey Board of Education. "South Surrey has been developing very rapidly and this addition will help support our district in addressing the needs of our growing community. We thank the provincial government for their investment and look forward to continuing to work together to increase capacity and create modern learning environments for our students."
The Sunnyside addition is the latest project to prepare for construction in South Surrey, on the heels of Douglas Elementary and Edgewood Elementary, which both opened earlier this school year. The opening of Douglas Elementary alleviated a considerable overcrowding at Sunnyside by moving the Montessori program from Sunnyside to Douglas.
Looking ahead to future growth in South Surrey, the province has also committed funding for an eight-classroom addition at Morgan Elementary, scheduled to open in spring 2023, and $39.1 million toward the new 655-seat Ta'talu Elementary, with before-and-after school childcare spaces, planned for fall 2023.
These projects will reduce the need for portables throughout the district as Surrey's student population continues to grow at a rate of approximately 1,000 students per year. The district currently has more than 74,000 students.
