VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD
VSB Interim Superintendent Appointment

August 5, 2021

As the Vancouver School Board continues its search for a new superintendent, it is pleased to have the support of Jan Unwin, who will serve as interim superintendent beginning in late September.

Jan brings decades of experience as a leader in the BC public education system. She is very familiar with Vancouver having worked with the District to build capacity in performance assessments of senior staff. Jan is also currently mentoring other senior leaders from around the province as part of the BC School Superintendents Association (BCSSA) mentoring program. In addition, Jan was appointed by both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Advanced Education as the superintendent of graduation and student transition. Prior to that appointment in 2014, her career included 18-years with School District No. 42 (Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows) as elementary and secondary school principal, assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent and superintendent of schools.

The Board's recruitment process for a new, permanent superintendent continues to progress and is led by a search committee made up of four trustees, supported by District staff. They have contracted Boyden, an executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment process. The decision about a successful candidate will be determined by the full Board.

Engagement is important the Board, including with formal stakeholder groups and the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), s wx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations as well as with Urban Indigenous people.
