Additions at École K.B. Woodward Elementary and White Rock Elementary are the two latest capital projects to break ground in the Surrey School District.
Both schools are receiving eight-classroom additions thanks to funding from the Ministry of Education, providing $7.6 million to the White Rock addition and $14.1 million to K.B. Woodward. Two surplus classrooms at K.B. Woodward will also be converted to kindergarten classrooms as part of the project.
"We are very excited to see both of these projects get underway," said Surrey Board of Education Chair Laurie Larsen. "By increasing capacity at both of these schools, we are not only building the best possible learning environments for our students, but are laying the groundwork for their future success."
The additions will see 195 new student spaces at White Rock Elementary, raising its capacity to 655 students, and 240 new student spaces at École K.B. Woodward Elementary, increasing capacity to 730 students. The projects aim to reduce the need for portables in both communities.
White Rock Elementary's addition is scheduled for occupancy in Fall 2022 while École K.B. Woodward's addition is targeted to open the following year, in Spring 2023.
The Ministry of Education has a goal of creating 9,600 new student spaces in Surrey by 2025.
