The Learning Buddies Network (LBN), a non-profit organization that helps elementary students develop essential literacy and math skills, is looking for secondary student volunteers for its fall reading mentor program.
The program, run by undergraduates from SFU, UBC and other local post-secondary institutions, pairs elementary students with volunteers to practice reading and engage in fun mentorship and group activities. Last year, 550 volunteers provided 7,800 hours of free effective and tailored tutoring support to young learners.
One-on-one mentorship with LBN provides an opportunity for secondary students to fulfill volunteer hours requirements while gaining valuable leadership experience and communication skills, meeting new friends, creating networking connections and making an impact in the life of a younger student by building their learning skills, self-esteem and a positive attitude.
Responsibilities of reading mentors include attending math and reading training, orientation, mentor sessions and meetings, completing mentor reports, preparing lesson material, tracking student progress, reporting to the program coordinators and executive coordinator, and assisting in volunteer recruitment.
The fall program will be delivered virtually and runs from Oct. 11 to Dec. 17. Mentor training and orientation dates are as follows:
Reading Mentor Training: Sunday, Sept. 26 & Sunday, Oct. 3 (5-7 p.m.)
Math Mentor Training: Saturday, Sept. 25 & Saturday, Oct. 2 (5-7 p.m.)
Orientation (all mentors): the week of Oct. 4
The deadline to apply is Sept. 12. For more information, visit learningbuddiesnetwork.com or follow LBN on Instagram.
