UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF THE NORTH
UCN Announces Partnership to Promote Manitoba's Mining Industry Growth

March 6, 2024

University College of the North (UCN) has secured a strategic partnership with NORCAT, a top-tier non-profit organization specializing in training and development services. Our collaboration is designed to strengthen mining exploration and projects in Manitoba, particularly in northern and Indigenous communities.

"Cultivating opportunities in northern Manitoba is at the heart of this partnership with NORCAT. This collaboration serves as a catalyst, paving the way for a wealth of opportunities in the education and mining sectors while contributing to the prosperity of individuals and communities across northern Manitoba," said Doug Lauvstad, UCN President and Vice-Chancellor.

UCN's collaboration with NORCAT will help address key workforce development and industry challenges.

"This partnership reflects our shared vision with the University College of the North, empowering Manitoba through accessible education, sustainable growth, and creating opportunities for a prosperous future in the mining sector," said Jason Bubba, NORCAT's Chief Operating Officer.

Manitoba is currently at the forefront of critical and strategic minerals, with 29 out of the 31 minerals listed on Canada's 2021 Critical Minerals List located in our province. This presents an exciting opportunity for UCN and NORCAT to stimulate economic growth and strengthen domestic capacity for priority supply chains. Six of these minerals, identified by the Canadian government as pivotal for economic growth, hold the key to substantial economic advantages for communities near potential mineral exploration and development projects.
