CAPILANO UNIVERSITY
CapU Squamish to install FIFA-grade turf field

July 11, 2024

In July, Capilano University will begin preparations to install a FIFA-grade turf field at its new campus in Squamish.

The turf field will replace the existing soccer field and has been designed to meet the high certification standards required for professional level play.

The project is slated for completion in late September, in advance of the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Soccer National Championship, hosted by Capilano University. The CCAA Championship will draw Canada's top eight women's college soccer teams and more than 200 athletes and coaches to Squamish from November 6-9, 2024.

"We are looking forward to showcasing our new turf field and Squamish campus at the upcoming championships in November," says Brian Storey, associate vice president of CapU Squamish. "In the longer term, the field provides an excellent opportunity for the University to support the community and connect with individuals, families and spectators who will use our world-class field," Storey adds.

"The current field is due for an upgrade and this is the perfect time to make it happen," notes Georgette Reed, CapU director of athletics and recreation. "We are also thrilled that this field will remain as a legacy of this event to serve the soccer community in Squamish after the tournament concludes."

The University has selected FieldTurf, a Tarkett Sports Company, for the field replacement. A Canadian company, FieldTurf has installed more than 25,000 fields worldwide, including BC Place Stadium, the Richmond Oval Blue Field and Starlight Stadium in Langford.

The field replacement is one of several projects the University is undertaking in preparation for its inaugural fall term at CapU Squamish, which begins in September. Additional projects include replacing the gymnasium floor, upgrading classroom technology and updating student housing facilities.

The Squamish campus will remain closed to the public through August. Later this fall,  the University will launch a formal reservation process to book athletic facilities at CapU Squamish.
