Strong sense of community drives Brock's recognition as one of Hamilton-Niagara's Top Employers

January 20, 2025

Brock University has been named one of Hamilton-Niagara's Top Employers for 2025.

This is the seventh time that Brock has been recognized in the annual competition, organized by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers, which recognizes Hamilton-Niagara organizations that are leaders in providing exceptional places to work. Brock has received recognition in every year it has applied.

The 2025 winners were announced in a feature magazine published Thursday, Jan. 16 by The Hamilton Spectator and on Eluta.ca

Brock President and Vice-Chancellor Lesley Rigg said the University's passionate faculty, staff and librarians play a vital role in making the institution an inclusive and welcoming place that offers a world-class educational experience and drives transformative change on campus and beyond.

"I've known since I first stepped onto campus that Brock was special and this recognition is further validation of our reputation as being an outstanding place to work," she said. "The strong and supportive community environment that exists at the University empowers employees to champion one another in achieving the shared goals of supporting student success and research excellence."

Employers were evaluated against other organizations in their field on eight criteria: workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.

Some of the reasons Brock was selected include its flexible work options and generous paid time off; tuition subsidies for employees and their dependents; range of Brock-led leadership and career development programs; comprehensive benefits and pension plan, including maternity leave top-up; and support for employee health and well-being with a commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Amanda Villella, Acting Associate Vice-President, People and Culture, said Brock is committed to fostering a campus culture where employees feel respected, supported and valued as they meaningfully contribute to advancing the University's strategic goals. Equally important, she said, is supporting employees in achieving their own career objectives and fostering growth within their roles.

"We want employees to look forward to coming to Brock every day and to feel empowered to flourish both personally and professionally," she said. "Recognizing the unique needs of faculty and staff across the University, and providing opportunities to apply their diverse experiences, perspectives and talents to communal challenges, creates an environment where employees are inspired to succeed and make a difference."

Villella cites the cross-collaborative effort of employees to tangibly contribute to decolonization and indigenization efforts on campus as an example of how the Brock community thrives in working together to achieve common goals. The expansion of dedicated spaces on campus providing specialized supports and resources, and the implementation of the University's equity census, she added, also highlights Brock's commitment to growth and meeting the evolving needs of employees and students.
