BROCK UNIVERSITY
Brock joins national network to deepen research impact

April 2, 2025

Brock University has joined Research Impact Canada (RIC), a national network of more than 20 universities committed to maximizing the impact of research in everyday life through knowledge mobilization and collaboration.

Acting Vice-President, Research Michelle McGinn says joining RIC is the next step in Brock's knowledge mobilization efforts, a key priority in the University's strategic plan, Transforming people, reimagining the future.

"The essence of research excellence can be seen through the transformative contributions we make to society," she says. "Knowledge mobilization connects our scholarship to the wider world, not only by applying the results of our work, but also by creating opportunities for direct input from relevant users to shape our future scholarship."

McGinn also notes that research granting agencies, such as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, require knowledge mobilization plans as part of the application process, making the RIC network an invaluable asset for Brock scholars.

Research Impact Manager Jayne Morrish says the newly minted membership reflects Brock's commitment to make a meaningful difference through research that advances societal well-being by informing policies and programs, helping to create new services and improving existing supports for people dealing with a wide range of challenges.

"Rather than simply sharing research findings, knowledge mobilization is about ensuring that research is accessible, usable and impactful - contributing to real-world solutions and long-term change," she says.

Morrish says Brock's membership in RIC will enhance researchers' ability to carry out their knowledge mobilization planning, as well as provide access to expertise available that will support them in this process.

Brock's Research Impact Unit already offers a supportive and strategic process for researchers to plan their knowledge mobilization efforts.

This process includes identifying:

  • research outputs such as publications, presentations and plain-language summaries
  • research outcomes such as new policies arising from the work
  • broader research impacts such as the advancement of scientific methods, economic development and other benefits

"Through this network, we will have access to training, shared resources and opportunities to build collaborations with other leading institutions, helping to expand the impact of Brock research locally, provincially, nationally and globally," Morrish says.
