UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
UCalgary's Biogeoscience Institute celebrates 75th anniversary

April 7, 2025
Located on the doorstep of Kananaskis Country, UCalgary's Biogeoscience Institute (BGI) has been a leader in field research since 1950. As the only research station for the Canadian Rockies and Foothills, BGI's mission is to provide and support high-quality science through independent research and research clusters. BGI has built strong, lasting partnerships with the peoples and communities of Treaty 7, the Bow/Kananaskis Valley, the City of Calgary, and beyond.

As part of the University of Calgary's annual Giving Day campaign, BGI has launched a fundraising campaign to ensure they can provide excellent teaching, learning and research opportunities, access to state-of-the-art research tools and equipment, and unrivalled experiences for visitors from across Canada and around the world.

"Our 75th anniversary provides a unique opportunity to celebrate field research and support the enhancement of data collection and tools that leads to a deeper understanding of scientific concepts for the students, researchers and broader community," says Dr. Steven Vamosi, PhD, scientific director, Biogeoscience Institute.

In addition to a fundraising campaign, BGI has a number of events planned throughout the year, including a lunch-and-learn on May 10 featuring researchers from the R.B. Miller Field Station, an app-guided walking tour around the Barrier Lake Field Station to learn about the history and current research in the Valley, and a dinner event in the winter with speakers from the Barrier Lake Field Station.

Since its launch in 2017, UCalgary Giving Day has raised more than $13 million to create positive change on campus and in the community. Support for the Biogeoscience Institute Impact Fund will allow the Institute to continue to offer high quality experiential learning and research opportunities, and will ensure BGI continues to play an important role in advancing environmental protection policy and our understanding of how natural resources are changing and evolving.

UCalgary Giving Day 2025 is April 2-16. Whether you support research, student awards or another area that's meaningful to you, your gift will help change lives and shape the future. Eligible gifts will be matched, up to $2,500 per gift, per fund but only while matching funds last, so be sure to give early! Make your gift today at ucalgary.ca/givingday.
