BROCK UNIVERSITY
Brock takes top spot in Canadian university sport management research

June 10, 2025

Brock has ranked first in Canada for university sport management research contributions for the third consecutive year.

The annual assessment by the University of North Texas' Sports Innovation Project also rated Brock sixth overall among 69 universities around the world.

Evaluations are based on the number of scholarly papers that faculty members have published in three of the world's flagship sport management journals: Journal of Sport Management, published by the North American Society of Sport Management; European Sport Management Quarterly, published by the European Association for Sport Management; and Sport Management Review, published by the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand.

Researchers from Brock's Department of Sport Management (SPMA) published 67 papers that appeared in the three journals between 2014 and 2024.

Each placing within the Top 100 authors, Brock's leading contributors include Associate Professor of Sport Management Michael Naraine, Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director Shannon Kerwin and Assistant Professor Ashley Thompson.

The depth and breadth of research undertaken by SPMA faculty include digital marketing, enhanced governance practices in sport, improved systems of people and culture, and impactful findings related to issues that address equity, diversity and inclusion across various sport sectors.

"It is this innovative research that is mobilized into the classroom that contributes to students' workforce readiness," says Naraine.

Outside the classroom, SPMA students have opportunities to apply this knowledge through a wide variety of experiential education opportunities with local and national sport organizations.

"Brock's near 30-year sport management history has amassed a robust, interconnected alumni network which has been integral in securing coveted experiential and career opportunities that give Brock students a competitive edge," says Peter Tiidus, Dean for the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences.
