With over a century of academic excellence, the Université de Sudbury today (July 10) unveils its new Leadership and Governance Academy, a national hub for professional learning designed for leaders, managers, and board members of nonprofit organizations (NPOs), institutions, and public organizations across the country.
In a context where governance and leadership challenges are increasing within the community and institutional sectors, the Université de Sudbury is innovating by applying its academic expertise to practical, hands-on training. This initiative builds on a tradition of rigorous teaching, refreshed by a modern coaching approach focused on the real challenges facing NPOs and public and community institutions in Canada.
A Strategic Collaboration for and by the Forces Driving Professional Training for NPOs
The Academy's programming is developed in partnership with Discitus, a recognized leader in leadership and management training for board members, and the Centre for Excellence in Organizational Governance (CEOG), an authority on governance. This unique partnership ensures highly credible, immediately transferable training delivered by a nationwide team of experienced specialists.
"These programs are tailored for NPOs and institutions. With our 'by and for' approach, our network of trainers from within our institutions and community will deliver microprograms and credentials that meet expectations."
- Serge Miville, President and Vice-Chancellor, Université de Sudbury
"The programs and courses developed by our team of expert trainers over the past 15 years are now available to the public, with one goal: to support leader-managers and boards in bringing out the best in people and their organizations."
- Alain Vachon, Founder, Discitus
« We are thrilled that the education programs leading to the Non-Profit Professional Director (NPPD.d) designation will now be offered by a university institution. Joining forces to professionalize governance in our communities is a winning decision for the Centre for Excellence in Organizational Governance ( CEOG). »
- Julie Léger, GPC.d, Director, Centre for Excellence in Organizational Governance
An Accessible, Relevant, and Recognized Training Offer
Starting in the fall of 2025, the Academy will offer more than twenty micro-credentials and microprograms delivered online in synchronous mode, including content in leadership management, governance, NPO funding, government relations, and change management. These courses will be recognized by the Université de Sudbury and will include digital badges, university certificates, and, in some cases, lead to professional designations.
Each course will be based on:
- Practical scenarios and transferable tools
- An active andragogical approach focused on coaching and co-construction
- A national cohort of learners in key roles
- A team of expert trainers with practical expertise in the subject matter
A Clear Ambition: To Promote Leadership and Good Governance Across Canada
With this Academy, the Université de Sudbury affirms its role as a leader in strengthening the capacities of NPOs, public institutions, and civil society. This project is part of a renewed commitment to building strong, well-governed communities capable of addressing contemporary challenges with competence and ethics.
