UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN BRITISH COLUMBIA
Community partners collaborate to explore life sciences economy for northern B.C.

August 21, 2025

The City of Prince George is pleased to announce that it has received a $500,000 grant from the Province's Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP). The City's economic development division is supporting a partnership between the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, Northern Health, and the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) who are working together to understand the economic impact of building a life sciences economy in northern B.C.

The life sciences industry includes pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, and other work related to clinical health research and innovation. The economic feasibility study will incorporate market research, sector analysis, engagement with interested parties, and policy and funding alignment to identify existing gaps in the region and attract investment.

The project started this spring and will be completed in phases over the next 18 months.

Chief Dolleen Logan, Lheidli T'enneh First Nation

"Global economies are shifting more rapidly than ever before. It is prudent for us to examine pathways to enhance and secure our economic viability through a variety of growing sectors and verticals. This study reflects once again the positive outcomes of UNBC opening in our community 35 years ago."

Julia Bickford, Northern Health Executive Director, Research Innovation & Evaluation

"Northern Health and UNBC hold a strong and unique partnership that supports a robust commitment to research and the practical applications in a health care environment. The grant supporting this project is an important step in qualifying the benefits and role that we can collectively play in Prince George as a hub for health research nationally and internationally."

Dr. Paula Wood-Adams, UNBC Vice-President, Research and Innovation

"By working with the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, Northern Health and the City of Prince George to identify opportunities for a life sciences economy, this study represents a shared commitment to advancing knowledge that drives sustainable economic diversification in the community and across the region. This collaboration reflects a shared vision where community, innovation, and health intersect to shape a stronger future."

Deklan Corstanje, City of Prince George Economic Development Manager

"This project aims to understand the potential for Prince George as a hub for health resources in the north. We are excited to support our local partners to understand the feasibility of building a life sciences sector in Prince George and the economic benefits it could bring to our community."
