Algoma University Community Recognized for Leadership and Impact at theSault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce 2025 Strive Algoma Visionary Awards Gala

January 26, 2026

Members of the Algoma University community were celebrated at the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce (SSMCOC) 2025 Strive Algoma Visionary Awards (AVA) Gala on Friday, underscoring the University's continued impact across leadership, innovation, and community engagement.

The annual gala brought together leaders and changemakers from across the region to recognize excellence and meaningful contributions by young professionals. Algoma University community members were nominated and honoured across multiple categories, reflecting the breadth of talent and commitment associated with the institution. Two outstanding Algoma University alumni were among this year's distinguished award recipients.

A 2025 Psychology graduate, Minion Paul received the Newcomer Achievement Award of Distinction in recognition of her exceptional commitment to equity, student leadership, and community service. During her time at Algoma U, Minion held several senior roles with the Algoma University Students' Union (AUSU), representing students across all campuses, leading major advocacy initiatives, and consistently prioritizing student well-being, access to supports, and meaningful representation. "When I first came here, I knew I wanted to do things differently," said Paul. "So to every newcomer, do not be afraid to stand out and do it differently. Don't follow the crowd. Do things the way you believe in."

Nina Toulouse, Anishinaabe kwe from Whitefish River First Nation, received the Indigenous Visionary Award of Distinction for her outstanding leadership and care on behalf of Indigenous students and community members. Widely recognized for her advocacy work for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG), Nina completed a combined major in Indigenous Studies and Anishinaabemowin at Algoma U and served as president of the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students' Association (SASA), where she strengthened cultural representation on campus, expanded student supports, and consistently championed the voices and experiences of Indigenous students.

"This is a real honour for me, on behalf of myself and Anishinaabe people, I feel very blessed," said Toulouse. "As a mother, I try to walk a good path and leave good moccasin tracks for my children. This is for all MMIWG, and for my mother. I am not just self-made, I am community-made. What are we doing, and where are we going, without shared vision?"

In addition to celebrating these achievements, Algoma University was proud to sponsor and present the Strive Young Professional of the Year Award to Emily Arbour, a Bachelor of Social Work graduate who is currently a Registered Social Worker and Addictions Specialist at Sault Area Hospital.

"Seeing so many members of the Algoma University community recognized at the AVA Gala is a powerful reminder of the role our institution plays in shaping leaders and supporting innovation across our region," said Brian Leahy, Director of External Relations at Algoma University. "Our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and partners continue to make us proud through their dedication, creativity, and impact."

The strong presence of Algoma University at this year's event highlighted not only individual accomplishments but also the collective strength of a community committed to learning, collaboration, and positive change. Algoma University extends its congratulations to all nominees, finalists, and award recipients and thanks the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, Strive, and the AVA organizers for their continued leadership in celebrating excellence within the community.
