Stepping into the gym can feel intimidating, especially when you're surrounded by unfamiliar equipment and seasoned gym-goers.
TMU students Cami Rabia and Abbygail Baker-Douglas felt this way too, despite wanting to be more active. That changed when they joined TMU Recreation's Workout Buddies program.
"I really enjoy working out, but I dislike public gyms," says Rabia. "So when I saw there was a workout buddy program, I thought that was really interesting and signed up."
While Baker-Douglas has a gym membership near her home, she also signed up because she wanted the option to work out while on campus.
Finding the right match
Before launching the Workout Buddies program, TMU Recreation talked to students. They learned many of them would be more active if they had a workout partner.
"The idea was to bring together students looking for a gym partner and help them find their match," says Matt Edmonds, program coordinator in the Recreation Department.
The program matches students based on an intake form that asks them about their availability, fitness goals, preferred workout styles, identity and interests.
Rabia is in her second year of aerospace engineering. Baker-Douglas is in her second year of occupational health and safety. Despite different programs and schedules, the program's intake form ensured they were well-matched.
"It's very tailored, they asked specific questions so you don't get paired with just anyone," says Rabia. "I got paired with Abigail, and we have a lot of similar interests, we work out the same and like the same programs."
"I have such a busy schedule, between classes and work. So being able to put in my availability before we even got matched was really helpful," says Baker-Douglas.
The power of accountability
Everyone can think of a time they wanted to skip a workout, but went anyway because they promised a friend.
"My favourite part is the accountability," says Baker-Douglas. "Whether I want to or not, I have to push myself to go because I made a commitment."
Building confidence together
Working out with a buddy helps students stay committed. It also makes the gym a lot less scary.
"Often one friendly face is all it takes to feel like you belong, and that's why we don't just match people with a buddy," says Edmonds.
The program also provides group orientations. All Workout Buddies learn about the space, the equipment and the available programs.
For Rabia and Baker-Douglas, working out with someone with similar experiences helped build their confidence over time.
"I did not go to any of the gyms at TMU whatsoever. Ever since I started the program, I feel a lot more confident going to the gym." says Rabia. "I like that I'm constantly working out with someone, and I don't have to feel embarrassed because she's also doing it with me."
Making the most out of the program
Having a workout buddy can make working out easier, but being intentional can help students get the most out of the program.
Set a goal and share it: You're more likely to stay active when you're working toward something specific. Let your buddy in on your goals so you can support each other.
Keep it sustainable: Consistency matters more than intensity. Planning to exercise once or twice a week all semester is far more effective than trying for five days a week and burning out. Start with a pace you can stick to.
Embrace the awkward phase: It's normal for the first few meetups to feel a bit uncomfortable. Every new partnership takes time to find its rhythm. Stick with it; you'll settle in, build momentum, and feel more confident with each visit.
How to sign up
The program is free for all TMU students.
After signing up, you'll be matched with a buddy and invited to an orientation night where you'll meet, make a plan and get familiar with the Recreation and Athletic (RAC) facilities.
