Brock University and DSA Canada Launch Online Sales Training Course for Canada's Growing Independent Sales Workforce

February 27, 2026

As more Canadians turn to flexible, independent income opportunities, the Direct Sellers Association of Canada (DSA Canada) and Brock University Professional and Continuing Studies (Brock PCS) have partnered to launch a new online training program designed to strengthen professional sales skills and ethical business practices in the direct selling sector.

The Fundamental Sales Skills for Direct Sellers course is a self-guided, on-demand program developed through collaboration between industry leaders and academic experts. The course aims to support independent sales consultants (ISCs) operating in today's increasingly digital and socially driven marketplace.

More than 1.1 million Canadians are involved in direct selling, most working part-time to supplement income. The sector generates an estimated $8.74 billion in total annual economic impact, including $3.38 billion in retail sales. As social and online selling channels continue to expand, structured training and ethical guidance are becoming increasingly important for independent sellers and the consumers they serve.

"This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting a professional, ethical, and well-trained independent sales workforce," said Peter Maddox, President of DSA Canada. "The course complements the training programs already offered by our member companies and reinforces the importance of integrity, consumer trust, and strong selling fundamentals."

The curriculum focuses on practical, real-world skills, including:

  • Understanding ethics and responsible business conduct in direct selling
  • Identifying lead generation and customer engagement opportunities
  • Applying selling strategies across in-person, online, and social media channels
  • Building long-term customer relationships
  • Setting and achieving income and sales goals

The development of course content was led by Becky Launder, founder of Modern Direct Seller, and a respected direct selling trainer and educator. It is designed to reflect current trends in digital entrepreneurship and social selling.

Nathan Cheney, Executive Director for Brock PCS, said the initiative aligns with the institution's focus on accessible, industry-relevant education.

"Brock University is committed to providing flexible learning opportunities that respond to evolving workforce needs," said Cheney. "This program supports independent learners by equipping them with practical skills that can strengthen both business outcomes and consumer confidence."

ISCs affiliated with a DSA Canada member company may be eligible for a discounted course fee.
