The University of Windsor is launching a new accelerated pathway to medical school that will allow qualified students from any undergraduate program to transition to the American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM) after as little as two years at UWindsor.
Beginning in fall 2026, students who meet the required academic and ACSOM admission conditions can pursue a route leading to both a UWindsor undergraduate degree and an ACSOM Doctor of Medicine degree in as little as six years. Under the agreement, at least 50 conditional-admission positions will be available each year to qualified UWindsor students.
"This pathway significantly expands what is possible for University of Windsor students who aspire to careers in medicine," says J.J. McMurtry, president and vice-chancellor. "Students can pursue the undergraduate field that interests them while gaining access to a clear, accelerated route that can lead to both a UWindsor degree and an MD."
Unlike pathways tied to a particular undergraduate degree, the UWindsor Medical Pathway is open to qualified students across undergraduate programs. Students can build their undergraduate education around their interests while completing the prerequisite courses and other requirements for admission to ACSOM.
Students begin their studies at UWindsor. Those who satisfy the pathway requirements and ACSOM's admission conditions then transition to ACSOM in Dominica, which delivers the medical program and awards the MD. Admission is not automatic.
"The American Canadian School of Medicine is committed to creating new opportunities for qualified Canadian students to pursue medical education," says Dr. Andrew Padmos, ACSOM's executive vice-president for Canada. "Our partnership with the University of Windsor creates a new pathway for students while strengthening connections between medical education and the Windsor region."
Students who successfully complete all requirements of the pathway and ACSOM medical program can receive both a University of Windsor undergraduate degree and an ACSOM MD.
ACSOM is a non-profit medical school based in Dominica. The partnership adds a new option for UWindsor students pursuing careers in medicine and reflects the University's focus on creating pathways that connect undergraduate education with professional opportunities.
Graduates seeking to practise medicine in Canada must meet applicable examination, residency and provincial licensing requirements. Completion of the pathway does not guarantee a Canadian residency position or medical licence.
