UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH
OpenEd Launches New Integrated Admission Pathway Program for English Language Learners

November 29, 2018

In September 2018, English Language Programs (ELP) at Open Learning and Educational Support (OpenEd) launched the Integrated Admission Pathway a new pathway specifically designed for international students looking to improve their English language proficiency while studying at the University of Guelph (U of G).

The pathway consists of a combination of selected degree-credit and English language courses to provide a simultaneous learning experience within a supported environment.

Rather than enrolling in five academic courses at once, students commit to a one-year pathway. This unique pathway begins with a sheltered degree-credit course, along with English language instruction classes, and progressively builds throughout the course of three semesters.

After three semesters, students will have completed five degree-credit courses that can be applied towards their degree programs and will be well positioned for success in their undergraduate studies.

"The creation of this new pathway aims to prioritize English language training, while providing better support for our international students on campus," says Michelle Fach, director of OpenEd. "We are pleased to roll out a newly-designed pathway that aligns with the University of Guelph's Strategic Mandate Agreement to build international capacity for growth and change."

"There's often a gap between the academic expectations that international students have when they come to a Canadian university and what they actually encounter when they get here," explains Julian Inglis, ELP business development and program manager. "The goal of the Integrated Admission Pathway is to close this gap and help our students become active members of the U of G community."

For over a decade, ELP has been offering English for academic purposes programs including the English Language Certificate Program, the Guaranteed Admission Pathway and the Graduate Preparation Program.

The current Integrated Admission Pathway cohort has 25 students and, based on current interest, this number is expected to multiply significantly in the coming years.
