Gloves, helmets and sticks littered the ice from end to end on March 14th as the Griffins women's hockey squad celebrated their third-consecutive ACAC championship.
The Griffins defeated the NAIT Ooks 3-2 to sweep the final series 3-0.
Fourth-year defensive forward Morgan Casson played hero for the MacEwan team, scoring the winning goal just over eight minutes into overtime. It was a case of history repeating itself - Morgan also scored an overtime winner against SAIT to clinch the 2017 ACAC Championship.
Griffins Head Coach Lindsay McAlpine says being the hero is in Morgan's nature. "She's a hard-working player with a big heart. And that's what wins us championships."
Lindsay, who was named the ACAC Women's Hockey Coach of the Year, adds that her team's character is second to none. "Starting with our leadership and our fifth-year players right to our rookies everyone had exceptional championship runs."
Griffins forward Chantal Ricker was named ACAC playoff MVP after leading the Griffins with four goals and five points in six playoff games.
MacEwan becomes just the third team in ACAC women's hockey history to call themselves three-peat champions. "It's absolutely amazing to create a legacy for MacEwan," said Morgan. "There's so much pride now with this program. We want to keep the streak going."
