The Winnipeg Foundation commits $1 million to support innovation seed funding for UM health sciences researchers

December 12, 2019

The Winnipeg Foundation announced on December 10th its commitment of $1 million to support health sciences research at the University of Manitoba.

The funding will establish The Winnipeg Foundation Innovation Grants in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. Innovation grants provide opportunities for researchers to explore emerging new questions and develop their research to the point of qualifying for additional external funding.

"Our intention with this investment is to seed innovative interdisciplinary research. We know that the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences researchers will have a tremendous impact on health research, for the benefit of us all," said Doneta Brotchie, chair, The Winnipeg Foundation.

Dr. Brian Postl, dean, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, said: "These grants will undoubtedly enhance the university's national reputation for innovative interdisciplinary research with disruptive impact, as well as increase our competitiveness in terms of national research funding. With this gift from The Winnipeg Foundation, we'll be able to expand and build capacity for research."

The Winnipeg Foundation is a noble advocate of education. The Foundation's support of the University of Manitoba spans nearly 30 years and includes investments in research, scholarships and bursaries, and other programs to remove barriers to post-secondary education.

"Today's announcement is incredible news for our researchers, our university and our community," said Dr. David Barnard, president and vice chancellor of the University of Manitoba. "The Winnipeg Foundation's support will continue to have an impact for generations to come."

Research at the University of Manitoba is partially supported by funding from the Government of Canada Research Support Fund.
