UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH
Vice-Provost Carrie Chassels Joining Northeastern University in Vancouver

August 9, 2021

Dr. Carrie Chassels, vice-provost (student affairs), has been named associate dean at Northeastern University's Vancouver campus. She begins her appointment Sept. 7.

"Dr. Chassels is a valued U of G leader and colleague," said Dr. Gwen Chapman, provost and vice-president (academic). "Her experience, innovative ideas and tireless devotion to our students was a tremendous asset, especially during the past 18 months as we navigated the COVID-19 pandemic.

"While we are sorry to see her go, I am happy for her, both for being appointed to this new position and for being able to return to British Columbia, which I know holds a special place in her heart. I know that our students, staff and faculty will join me in wishing Carrie all the best."

Chassels joined U of G in August 2018 from Vancouver Island University, where she was associate vice-president (student affairs).

"From the very beginning of my appointment, I felt an immediate sense of belonging at U of G," Chassels said. "I found a community of like-minded professionals and academics with a deep commitment to supporting students as they develop as people, scholars and citizens. I quickly became a proud Gryphon in 2018 and I will forever be a champion of U of G."

Chassels added she will miss working with U of G's "extraordinary" student affairs team, especially its six directors "whose passion for driving student wellness, engagement, and success knows no bounds" and executive assistant Jessica Westlake "without whom I would not have been able to achieve a fraction of my initiatives."

At U of G, Chassels demonstrated enthusiasm, energy and commitment to student learning and student life. She oversaw Co-operative Education and Career Services, Student Housing, Student Life, Student Wellness, Athletics, and Child care and Learning. Her portfolio involves nearly 300 part- and full-time staff and more than 1,000 student employees.

An educator and academic administrator for nearly 30 years, Chassels previously held student service leadership positions at the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and with the Toronto District School Board.

Northeastern University is a top-rated private research university with a main campus in Boston and satellite campuses across the United States as well as in Vancouver and Toronto. It is known for experiential learning, especially its professional co-operative programs.

The University will commence a search for a new vice-provost (student affairs) in the coming months. Irene Thompson, director of student housing, will serve as interim vice-provost (student affairs).
