MACEWAN UNIVERSITY
University, EIA team up for future student success

June 3, 2022

MacEwan University and Edmonton International Airport (EIA) have signed a new agreement to work together to create new opportunities that will benefit MacEwan students. The agreement will also contribute to the economic growth of the region while strengthening the aviation sector.

The Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations will establish a framework for them to look for new ways to support the growth of both organizations. This will happen by creating learning and internship opportunities for students, by providing research opportunities for faculty members and by exploring creative ways to create new jobs through innovation.

This agreement comes on the heels of a similar agreement between MacEwan University and the Edmonton Elks, and multiple agreements between EIA and global and Canadian companies for future hydrogen developments at the airport, and an agreement with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for environmental and sustainability work in aviation. The MacEwan-EIA agreement will strengthen the connection between the two community leaders.

"We are thrilled to be working with EIA on this new partnership that will see MacEwan students getting the hands-on learning experiences needed to quickly transition into an ever-changing workforce upon graduation. Our work together will make the best use of the expertise at MacEwan while promoting sustainable economic growth. We are confident this will be a cooperative relationship between two important institutions in our region."

Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor, MacEwan University

"We are proud to partner with MacEwan University in our shared purpose to be a catalyst for the next generation of Canadian leaders. Strong partnerships, like the agreement between MacEwan University and EIA, accelerate opportunities and economic prosperity throughout our region. Organizations who partner together go further together. We are proud to support the most important part of our shared future - our youth."

Tom Ruth, President and CEO, Edmonton International Airport

As part of the agreement, MacEwan and EIA will create a joint committee. The committee will meet regularly to identify areas for collaboration, track progress and increase awareness of both organizations. Funding for future collaborations will be identified through grant-funding, industry collaboration and research support and there will be no additional costs for airport passengers or students.
