Salisbury fashion star wins gold at Skills Canada for the second year in a row

May 12, 2026

For the second year in a row, Salisbury Composite High student Kayla Klita won the gold medal in Fashion Technology at this year's Provincial Skills Canada Competition (PSCC). The Grade 11 student crafted a vest that wowed judges and received top marks. "It's really special to not only participate but to win gold for a second year in a row," says Klita. "I was actually more stressed this year because I had those expectations for myself, but I'm happy I won again."

Kayla Klita, Grade 11, received the gold medal in Fashion Technology at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition for the second year in a row.

Klita was joined by four other students from Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) at the PSCC. Over the course of two days, students were tasked with completing a challenge relevant to their respective trades. All completed projects had to meet industry standards and were then judged by a panel of experts. Despite fierce competition, Klita stood on top of the podium once again.

"The Board is so impressed with the level of dedication and skill students bring to their work every year," says Colleen Holowaychuk, the Board Chair of EIPS. "The Skills competitions have been a great platform for students to show off the impressive talents they possess on a provincial and national stage."

Approximately 500 senior high students from across Alberta competed in this year's PSCC. The competition featured more than 30 unique events ranging from robotics to auto services to graphic design to baking. All gold medalists, including Klita, will move on to represent Team Alberta at the 2026 Skills National Competition in Toronto from May 27-30.

Other EIPS students who competed in the 2026 PSCC include:

  • Hadley Beavan; Bev Facey Community High: baking
  • Zoe Duncan; Fort Saskatchewan High: baking
  • Nesia Fernandez; Campus EIPS: baking
  • Allyson Huculak; Campus EIPS: culinary arts

While Klita is preparing to make a big impression at the national competition later this month, she is quick to recognize the efforts of those who have helped her along her journey. "My fashions teacher from junior high still coaches me and she takes a lot of her own personal time to help me compete in the competition," says Klita. "So, I'm glad I get to go make her and all the staff at Salisbury proud."

Launched in 1992, PSCC is an annual national competition that aims to better equip youth with the knowledge and skills needed to advance the trade and technical sectors and to showcase career opportunities in both fields. Congratulations to Kayla Klita and all the students who participated in this year's Skills Canada Provincial Competition!
