University College of the North (UCN) will offer student housing in Flin Flon starting Fall 2025, thanks to a $2 million investment from multiple funding sources.
The new residence, funded by Prairies Canada, the Province of MB, the Manitoba Mineral Development Fund, and UCN, will accommodate students enrolled in UCN's growing programs, including its Mine Readiness Training program. It will ensure they have a safe and accessible place to live while pursuing their education, opening possibilities for new training. The facility has a commercial kitchen, which may allow future cooking-related programming.
"Finding a place to live while pursuing an education can be a significant challenge, especially in northern communities where housing options are limited," said Jamie Grant, AVP Community & Industry Solutions at UCN. "By removing this barrier, we are making education more accessible and supporting the growth of a skilled workforce in the North."
This initiative aligns with UCN's ongoing commitment to supporting workforce development in Northern Manitoba, particularly in the mining sector. The investment will make it easier for students to access training and enter high-demand careers in mining and related industries.
UCN is not taking applications for housing in Flin Flon until a later date.
