Algoma University is proud to announce that Shirley Horn has received this prestigious designation in recognition of her lifelong leadership, advocacy, and commitment to truth, reconciliation, and community.

A member of Algoma University's alumni family, Shirley completed her Fine Arts degree at Algoma University, holds an honorary doctorate, and is a founding member of the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association. She is also Algoma University's first-ever Chancellor.
A member of Missanabie Cree First Nation, Shirley Horn exemplifies the values of leadership, resilience, and dedication to reconciliation and education in Ontario and beyond. She has devoted her life's work to advancing Indigenous rights, cultural preservation, and education in Ontario, across Canada, and internationally, embodying the spirit of the Order of Ontario.
As an Elder and Residential School Survivor, Shirley brings lived experience to her advocacy, fostering understanding and healing through education and dialogue. Her impact resonates across the province and beyond, making her a truly deserving recipient of this honour.
