SHSAA Honours Three Sun West Sports Leaders

Three Sun West School Division teachers have been recognized by the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) for their outstanding contributions to school athletics during the 2025-26 school year. Krista Wenaas of Rosetown Central High School was named West Central Female Coach of the Year, Brent Larwood of Outlook High School was named West Central Male Coach of the Year, and Lance Morrison of Dinsmore Composite School received the West Central Official of the Year award.

The annual SHSAA awards recognize the male and female coaches of the year and the official of the year in each sports district across Saskatchewan. The West Central District includes all Sun West School Division schools.

Krista Wenaas said coaching is about supporting students as they grow both on and off the field of play.

"It's all about seeing the students becoming confident in their own abilities, and being part of their journey, whether it's their highs or lows. Coaching gives me an opportunity to get to know my students, parents and even community better. Although the award and recognition is appreciated, I have coached with and met so many equally deserving coaches. It's an honour to be acknowledged as part of the group."

Brent Larwood expressed gratitude for the athletes he has worked with throughout the year.

"I am very thankful for this award! I am honoured to have worked with so many athletes this year that have believed in our team and worked hard every day to make it better on and off the court, ice or track! Thank you so much!"

Lance Morrison, who has spent nearly three decades teaching, coaching and officiating, highlighted the important role officials play in student athletics.

"I have been teaching, coaching, and officiating for 29 years, and I value the role officials play in making sport possible. Beyond enforcing the rules, athletics provide students with opportunities to develop important physical and social skills, while learning the importance of sportsmanship in both winning and losing. To me, the best compliment as an official is when the focus remains on the game and not on who is calling it."

The recognition reflects the commitment of all three individuals to high school athletics and the positive impact they have on students, athletes, and their communities throughout the West Central District.
