MISSISSAUGA
MiWay Ambassadors Make a Huge Presence in Mississauga Schools this Year

June 7, 2018

The MiWay Student Ambassador Program is celebrating a milestone this year - it's the first time that the program has had student representation from every secondary school in the region's two largest school boards.

"Our team has worked incredibly hard to get representation from every secondary school at the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board," said Geoff Marinoff, Director of Transit. "This means that we had the potential to reach 72,000 high school students this year.  It has been a successful grassroots campaign to change the channel on how we move within Mississauga and how transit is an option for many trips. The youth of today are our future transit riders."

Marinoff added that a total of 55 student ambassadors from 32 Mississauga secondary schools participated in this year's MiWay Student Ambassador Program.

Today at City Council, four students were recognized for their contributions to the annual program in which students educate their school peers about MiWay in a fun and engaging way. This year, the two overall program winners are Alwin George and Cliantha Fernandes of St. Marcellinus Secondary School. They will receive one-year of free transit on MiWay and an iPad mini. Their school will receive 50 PRESTO cards valued at two trips per card.

Council also recognized Edrine Marie Yumang and Imudia Alexander from Iona Catholic Secondary School for winning the bus wrap contest. These two young artists submitted a theme highlighting The Future of Transit. It tells a story about the convenience, frequency, adaptability and modernization of transit. These students will both receive a $250 PRESTO card for their winning design.

"We are very impressed by these talented students and appreciate their fresh perspective on promoting transit to their student peers," added Marinoff.

Do you know a high school student who takes MiWay and is interested in earning volunteer hours while stirring up their creative side? Encourage them to apply online for the 2018-2019 MiWay Student Ambassador Program. Applications will be accepted until October 31, 2018.
