LANGFORD
MLA Parmar, Sooke School District, announce land secured for new middle school site in North Langford

August 22, 2024

BC NDP MLA Ravi Parmar, alongside the Sooke School District are announcing the acquisition of land to house a future new middle school in North Langford, supporting growing families in the region.

"With this new site for a future middle school, families in Langford can be confident that their children will have access to quality education closer to home," said Ravi Parmar, MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca. "This investment builds on the largest expansion of public education in the Sooke School District's history, highlighting our ongoing commitment to creating more educational opportunity for our communities."

This newly acquired 7.2 acre site at 2460 Gateway Road will be the future home for a new middle school. This comes following our Government's announcement in May that planning had been approved for a new secondary school, which would sit across from this newly purchased site.

"As the Westshore area continues to grow rapidly, securing land for a future middle school in North Langford is a crucial and welcome step," said Amanda Dowhy, Sooke School District Board Chair. "We are thankful for the province's ongoing commitment to expanding our capacity and supporting the increasing number of students in the Sooke School District."

These schools contribute to the BC Government's ongoing investments in expanding the Sooke School District, one of the fastest growing Districts in BC. Since 2017, the provincial government has invested over $270 million in creating 2,660 new student spaces in the Sooke School District, both by building new schools and expanding existing facilities.

This new middle school site, situated alongside the coming secondary school, reaffirms the Government's goal of building new schools that are safe, accessible, and welcoming, and service our fastest growing communities.

"Langford is one of B.C.'s fastest growing cities, with the need for more infrastructure, including schools. Council is committed to advocating for new schools, as more families are moving to Langford," said Scott Goodmanson, Mayor of Langford. "Projects like this new middle school will provide easy access to education, giving parents peace of mind knowing their children can safely commute to and from school by walking or biking through pedestrian and bike-friendly routes. The City will continue to work with SD62 and the Province to support the development of additional schools to meet the community's ongoing needs."
