Four Queen Elizabeth II scholarship awards, totalling $12,000, were presented to the top Nunavut Arctic College (NAC) nursing students on January 16. The awards are part of the Department of Health's continued financial support to train Nunavummiut nurses.
"I would like to congratulate the scholarship award recipients, and on behalf of all Nunavummiut, thank the Nunavut Arctic College students who have chosen nursing as a career," said Minister of Health George Hickes. "The scholarships and bursaries provided by the Department of Health for nursing and pre-nursing students are part of our commitment to educate and graduate more skilled Nunavummiut health professionals in our territory."
This year, the Department of Health confirmed with Health Canada that they will fund scholarships for Nunavut Inuit students in pre-nursing via the Indspire Awards program.
The 2017 scholarship awards winners are: Valerie Young, Mavis Ell, Sapatie Stokes and Fellen Atienza. Minister Hickes presented students with their $3,000 scholarship at a luncheon held in their honour.
The Queen Elizabeth II scholarship awards are presented annually to the top students in years two, three and four of the nursing program.
