Wind turbine manufacturer Nordex USA Inc. has donated two sections of a tower flange to Holland College's Wind Turbine Technology program. Flanges connect the wind turbine to the tower and support its weight.
Learning managers Morgan Carragher, left, and Jeff Cameron unpack the flange section donated to the program by Nordex USA Inc. The donated parts will be used to train students in the one-year Wind Turbine Technology program.
The flange comes from a wind turbine that was recently demolished in Hermanville, PEI after being damaged in a severe wind storm that compromised the stability of the foundation late last year. The students will be able to study the parts to learn more about how they work and how they are affected by the elements.
Donations from industry partners are invaluable learning tools, said Holland College President Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald.
"Our programs are based on applied and theoretical training, giving our students the tools and knowledge they need to enter the workforce with confidence. Gifts such as this enable students to learn using the parts they will encounter when they enter their chosen industry. We are extremely grateful to Nordex USA Inc. for their contribution to our Wind Turbine Technology program," he said.
Falk von Hörsten, North American Training Manager for Nordex, said the international company is looking forward to building a closer relationship with Holland College.
"We are pleased to be able to work in consultation with Holland College to provide valuable hands-on learning experiences for students and bringing them into our apprenticeship program," he said. "We are looking forward to welcoming graduates from the Wind Turbine Technology program into the Nordex family as we roll out projects across Canada.
The one-year Wind Turbine Technology program prepares students for the wind energy industry. Courses in math and physics reinforce their understanding of the mechanical and electrical systems on the turbine and hydraulic systems they will maintain as wind turbine technicians.
