UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG
New initiative to bring more Indigenous faculty to UWinnipeg

January 26, 2024

The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce a cluster hire of nine Indigenous faculty members across the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Business and Economics, and the Global College.

This Indigenous cluster hire is part of a larger effort to advance Reconciliation and increase BIPOC faculty representation at The University of Winnipeg.

"These appointments will contribute to Indigenous excellence across the University's faculties and strengthen our collective commitment to fostering a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion through increasing the representation of Indigenous academics," said Dr. Pavlina Radia, Provost and Vice-President, Academic.

Included in the hiring are tenure-track positions in the Departments of Anthropology, Business and Administration, Criminal Justice, Indigenous Studies, Kinesiology and Applied Health, Education, as well as the Master's in Development Practice - Environmental Studies and Sciences program overseen by Global College.

"UWinnipeg is committed to increasing Indigenous inclusion and representation within our institution, including among faculty members," said Dr. Chantal Fiola, Interim Associate Vice-President - Indigenous Engagement. "This is an exciting time of hope and optimism; we look forward to growing our community internally, building new relationships with Indigenous community-at-large, and ensuring UWinnipeg is a welcoming place for everyone."

This hiring initiative builds upon UWinnipeg's ongoing commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's calls to action, which includes three new Indigenous languages certificate programs launched in 2022, and the Indigenous Course Requirement introduced in 2016.

"We are excited to support this initiative and the commitment to Indigenous representation at UWinnipeg," said Gina Schiak, Director, HR Services, Human Resources. "We are committed to increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion in our workforce and work in partnership towards Reconciliation."

The University is currently seeking candidates whose scholarship advances learning and knowledge through teaching, research, and service in the above-mentioned areas. Full job postings are available on the University's website.
