Bringing innovation to life: over 120 student projects featured at Algonquin College's Applied Research Day

April 24, 2025

The largest iteration of Algonquin College's Applied Research Day occurred on April 11, with over 120 innovative student research projects presented under the theme Innovate, Impact, Inspire

The event celebrated the culmination of months of dedicated work by talented learners and faculty, who collaborated on cutting-edge projects to address real-world challenges faced by industry, government, and community partners across diverse fields, including Computer Programming, Interactive Media Design, Mobile Application Development, and Engineering. Additionally, the event featured eight faculty-led projects from the Research Development Institute (RDI) at Algonquin College.

"Applied research helps to bridge the gap between theoretical discovery and real-world application, making it an invaluable asset for our partner organizations seeking to solve everyday challenges. Our learners continue to impress by bringing innovation to life through their applied research projects," said Philip Dawe, Director, Applied Research at Algonquin College.

Over four months, one of the winning teams took on a full website redesign for Centre33, a safe and inclusive space for 2SLGBTQIA+ children and youth. The project included improving the mobile experience and other key enhancements.

"Coming from the Interactive Media Design program, I learned a lot about user interface and user experience (UI/UX), and we were introduced to different tools that helped us a lot with our project, and we can apply these skills to real-world situations," said Lyn Nguyen, Applied Research Day winning team member and Interactive Media and Design student at Algonquin College. "From ideation to final deployment, this project was a hands-on journey through design, development, and real-world collaboration. Seeing our work go live and make an impact is truly rewarding, and winning the showcase is the cherry on top!"

All projects serve real-world problem-solving solutions for industry partners across a variety of sectors, with winning projects from Biology, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Interactive Media Design, and Mobile Application Development programs. These initiatives offer great value for learners, faculty, and the community.
