The Algonquin Times took top honours at the Ontario Community Newspapers Association awards on Friday night, taking home the General Excellence prize for a college publication. 
The Times was one of three finalists in the category, beating newspapers from Durham College and Niagara College.
The award was presented at a gala ceremony at the Toronto Marriott Airport Hotel, which was attended by five student journalists journalists from The Times as well as professors Joe Banks and Karen Kavanagh. '
"It's gratifying to see our students honoured and both the journalism and advertising curriculums validated by the community newspaper industry," said Banks.
Student Sarah Ferguson was also nominated in the Student Feature Writing category, facing off against two student journalists from the University of Waterloo. Ferguson's entry, about retiring neuroscientist Leo Renaud, finished second.
The Algonquin Times celebrated its 30th anniversary last fall.
The Toronto-based OCNA "is a non-profit industry association comprising roughly 300 member newspapers located throughout the province. "
