Students in Conestoga's Recreation and Sport Administration program created a morning packed with activities, sports and games for 140 elementary school students alongside the City of Kitchener.
Recreation and Sport Administration students created a morning packed with activities, sports and games for elementary school students in partnership with the City of Kitchener.
The first-year students planned and facilitated the successful event at the Kitchener - Doon campus that was the culmination of an ongoing partnership with city, where placement students host workshops on leadership and facilitation skills for high school students who run programming for elementary-age children during recess.
The goal of the event held this spring at the Conestoga Student Recreation Centre was to celebrate the children for making positive and healthy choices by engaging in physical activity programming during recess throughout the school year, said program professor Haley Baxter.
"We wanted to focus on providing a fun and inclusive environment where the children could engage in a variety of physical activities that worked to promote teamwork and collaboration."
The day was a success thanks to the hardworking students and many of the children left with big smiles, Baxter said.
"I am extremely proud of the efforts of our students who demonstrated leadership skills and professionalism. The students' efforts reflected our commitment to teaching them how the programming of recreation and sports can positively impact the lives of individuals and communities. We aim to foster positive relationships within the community, including our ongoing partnership with the City of Kitchener, to offer our students valuable hands-on learning opportunities."
Conestoga's Recreation and Sport Administration program provides the skills, knowledge and experience to make an impact in this exciting field. Utilizing theory and best practices in the provision of sport and recreation services, students focus on inclusion, access, health and wellness promotion, programming, event planning, leadership and administration. Through interactive classroom experiences and community field placements, students bridge classroom learning to real-world practice while expanding a network with industry leaders.
