Thunderhawks Womens Hockey Team Making Their Mark

The Thunderhawks record reads 13 wins, 10 losses and 5 ties in the Loop Series. Most of their losses came when the team was learning to gel at the beginning of the season. As the season progressed the Thunderhawks improved as a team and have gained the reputation as a team to be reckoned with on the ice. The coaching staff believes that the team wouldn't be able to have such great success without every one of players bringing "their game" to each and every competition.

In the Loop Series, our Thunderhawks have taken on Fort Frances, Dryden, Queens Midget A, Queens Midget AA and the Fury. They has also played exhibition games against Lakehead University.

The Annual Caribou Coach Classic Tournament, hosted by the Thunderhawks November 4 - 6, saw our team really mesh and come together going to the finals for the second year in a row, unfortunately losing to the Midget AA Queens.

The Thunderhawks participated in the 9th Annual Lieutenant Governors Tournament in Winnipeg hosted by the Manitoba Women's Junior Hockey League. The Thunderhawks were able to wear for the first time their new, sleek looking jerseys at this prestigious tourney.

On the Friday morning they faced MWJHLs Western Predators and won 5-1. Later that day the Thunderhawks tackled MWJHLs Prairie Blaze and won 8-4. Saturday morning they met the MWJHLs Gray Owls and won 2-0. The Thunderhawks placed first overall in round robin play out of the 12 teams participating from western Canada. The team faced the Prairie Blaze again Saturday night for the quarter finals and won 7-0. Sunday morning the Thunderhawks encountered the MWJHL Northern Stars, they had a tough battle and outshot the stars 46-21, a 2-2 tie at the end of the third brought the game into overtime, and the Stars scored after almost 5 mins of 3 on 3. It was a hard loss for the team and they outplayed the Stars, however the Stars goaltender was unstoppable. Sunday afternoon the team took on off against Fort Saskatchewan Fury for Bronze. The Thunderhawks lost 4-2. The girls had a great weekend and finished 4th overall. The coaches are very proud of their progress, hard work, and commitment. Captain Drue Ahola and Assistant Captain Amy Penner were stat leaders for the tournament, both with 12 points. The Thunderhawks played some of their best hockey in Winnipeg, and we look forward to what the rest of the season has in store.

Storm the Thunderhawk has been on hand at a few games to lead the cheer for the team and show our Thunderhawks pride.

The Thunderhawks are very excited to head to Toronto early April to compete at the Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) Provincial Championships. The team proved last year that they have what it takes to compete at this level and are ready to bring home a medal this year.
