ST. LAWRENCE COLLEGE
SLC student wins national award for Precision Machining

June 12, 2024

St. Lawrence College (SLC) is thrilled to announce that Nathan Orr, a student from the General Machinist Apprenticeship program won bronze in the Skills Canada National Competition, held in Quebec City May 28 to 31. Nathan, who previously won gold at the Ontario Skills competition was one of more than 500 competitors from all regions of Canada who gathered to showcase their skills in over 40 skilled trade and technology competitions.

Nathan's victory sets a record for SLC as the first national award in Precision Machining at the national level, and it reflects his and his faculty's dedication to quality and skill development in his daily work and performance at the competition.

"We congratulate Nathan and his team of supporters, mentors, and faculty on this incredible achievement" said SLC President and CEO Glenn Vollebregt. "Competitions like Skills Canada are a terrific way to showcase the rewarding careers and range of skills taught at colleges like SLC. Our graduates are equipped to succeed and as this shows, are tops in the country when it comes to practicing their trade."

Nathan Orr was coached by faculty Clint Lawrence, Bruce McGregor, Bill Day, and John McGrath whose mentorship contributed significantly to his success.

Aidan Wornes, head of Apprenticeship and Associate Dean for the School of Trades at SLC echoes that sentiment. "There is a team approach taken to supporting and developing the skills of our students and apprentices, and seeing Nathan's hard work pay off with recognition at this level is incredibly rewarding. It validates our approach to training apprentices and reflects the hands-on experience students receive when they come to SLC."

The Skills Canada national competition serves as a platform for students to showcase their skills, gain valuable experience, and connect with industry professionals. It includes opportunities to showcase the rewards and options available to people curious about entering the trades as a profession. SLC appreciates the opportunity the competition provides to college students and apprentices.
