With school starting in a few weeks, the district is reminding families of the digital resources available on Surrey Schools ONE to ready their kids for the first day of school and to support them throughout the new school year.
Launched in 2020, Surrey Schools ONE is an extensive digital library for students, parents and educators to discover a wealth of learning materials, ranging from lesson plans incorporating household items, to newspaper articles encouraging literacy, to mindfulness exercises promoting mental well-being.
Students
Students can filter digital resources based on grade level and subject, with resources for reading and writing, math, science, social studies, art, physical education, ADST (applied design, skills and technologies) and languages.
A selection of student activities are also available in the form of interactive games and courses that promote online safety and digital citizenship. The selection includes:
- Minecraft Education, a lesson that introduces digital theft, media literacy, sharing and harassment concepts through a series of exciting Minecraft activities;
- Interland: Be Internet Awesome, an engaging online game that teaches kids about digital safety, hackers, phishing and cyberbullying while promoting skills for appropriate online behaviour;
- Ignition, a self-paced course for Grade 6 to 9 students that teaches modern digital health concepts such as digital emotional intelligence, digital dependency, online privacy and media literacy;
- Digital Superheroes, a simple page for younger students to learn about safety, kindness, respect and truthfulness while navigating the internet;
- Ninja Breakout, a series of online games to educate students to protect their private information, practise digital etiquette, seek out credible sources and find balance between the online world and the real world.
Parents
Parents can also sort digital resources by their child's grade level and look through ideas for engaging with literacy, numeracy and social and emotional learning.
- Literacy resources range from Strong Start and kindergarten to secondary, and cover skills such as reading and writing, speaking aloud, drawing, word play and sparking conversation.
- Numeracy resources span all grades and include such focuses as geometry, fractions, equations, integers, percents, ratios and estimates.
- Social & Emotional resources are for all ages and feature activities to encourage self awareness, mindfulness, inner reflection, healthy breathing exercises and being present.
Educators
Teachers and other educators have a wide variety of digital resources available at their fingertips on Surrey Schools ONE, including digital books, information databases and supports for communicating student learning (CSL), French immersion, arts education and sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI).
The website also features lesson plans broken up by grade level, as well as professional development opportunities spanning numerous subjects and grades. There are also curriculum supports for numerous groups - including Indigenous Peoples learning, learner support team (LST) and inclusive education - as well as collections of resources for Every Child Matters and a deep dive into inquiry-based learning.
Students, parents and educators are all encouraged to check Surrey Schools ONE regularly as the site is continually updated throughout the school year as learning needs and demand evolves.
